Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, the Episcopal bishop of Washington, urged President Trump to “have mercy” on immigrants and LGBTQ people in her sermon Tuesday at the National Prayer Service. “In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families. Some who fear for their lives,” she said, directly addressing the president at the Washington National Cathedral.
“They may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes and are good neighbors. They are faithful members of our churches and mosques, synagogues, gurdwara and temples.”
President Trump signed about 100 executive actions on his first day in office, some of which impact immigrants, LGBTQ individuals and minorities. One proclaimed that the U.S. government will only recognize two sexes, while another ordered the end of “radical and wasteful” diversity, equity and inclusion programs.
